good morning, everyone. it's friday, january 31. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00. the weekend is nearly here. we need to know what's going on weather-wise. here's lawrence. >> showers moving through again overnight if you are just getting up. still the roadways may be wet in spots. otherwise the system moving east. the showers beginning to slide out of town. so we are going to see some drier weather on friday, breezy too. out the door partly cloudy skies, temperatures cooler this morning. 49 in san francisco. 45 in concord. 49 san jose. toward the afternoon, it will be breezy and cool along the coastline temperatures in the mid-50s there. we'll find some mid-50s and some 60s inside the bay. let's check with liza battalones and traffic. >> everything is as it should be for bay area roads. still "friday light" for all feeder freeways leading towards the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see our sensors are picking up pretty decent traffic conditions out there.

the toll plaza is wide open for the commute out of oakland into san francisco with the metering lights still off. if you are heading for the rest of the commute, the 880 drive, there was roadwork in the oakland area. that's been picked up for the drive heading towards hayward. 880 still looking good for that drive out of hayward heading towards fremont at this hour. now heading for mass transit bart is still on time. the san mateo bridge still looking good with no delays for that drive leaving hayward bound for foster city. that's your "kcbs traffic." guys? >> thank you, liza. some breaking news right now at 5:00. a woman rushed to the hospital after a fire gutted a santa clara home overnight. kpix 5's keit do live at the scene gathering new information. kiet, i guess a smoke alarm woke up one family member? >> reporter: yeah, frank. i have to raise my voice a little because we are standing next to a ladder truck which just activated and it's now raining water down on the house. a couple of hot spots flared up so they have to cool that off right now. the roof is collapsed. that means from standing here

on the ground you can look through the house and see sky on the other end. the building is gutted. this is just a total loss right now. the fire started around 1:00 this morning on the 5000 block of avenita day lago just a couple of blocks away from the new 49er stadium and no one was awake so it was engulfed when the firefighters got there. a smoke alarm woke up a resident who woke up the other three adults inside. they all escaped on their own. one woman suffered minor burns to the lower part of her body. it started in the garage area which had a lot of stuff in it. >> the fire that was concentrated in the second story and the garage of the house. it took us about 40 minutes to have full control. >> reporter: the house is for sale. no reason to think that has anything to do with the cause. thank you very much. kiet do live for us down in santa clara. lunar new year festivities are in full swing in the bay area. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us in san francisco's chinatown where families are celebrating. >> reporter: that's right. exit the year of the snake, enter the year of the horse. i'm actually a horse myself so i'm kind of pumped about this. people all over the bay area have been participating in some ancient traditions. celebrating new year's eve last night is 106-year-old wing dur and four generations of his family. he came to america when he was 12. his family is among in restaurants. >> new year's day they just play and enjoy festival. >> reporter: the dinner includes traditions such as

two weeks from tomorrow. happening today, first lady michelle obama will fly out of san francisco after one more event this afternoon. but first she will join nancy pelosi for a women's lunch at the fairmont. and security is tight. yesterday a bomb-sniffing dog was part of a security sweep at a fancy san francisco restaurant. a huge motorcade pulled up near catania restaurant but mrs. obama was nowhere in sight. 5:05. the oakland boy accused of killing his sister last week is scheduled in court on monday. the 14-year-old will be prosecuted as a juvenile. police say he shot and killed his 17-year-old sister in their apartment. relatives say it was because she had bleached his clothes. the teen surrendered finally to oakland police wednesday after being on the run for a week. you could be the victim of a bait-and-switch scheme when shopping at outlet stores. when the outlet stores started they were selling goods that why overstocked or defective. but now the companies are making their own lower quality products that don't appear in

their regular stores. bay area representative anna eshoo is one of four members of congress writing to the ftc about outlets asking for an investigation of defective and unfair marketing practices at outlet stores. a san francisco internet cafe allegedly a magnet for criminals has agreed to shut down and the owner now promising not to open a similar business in the city for another five years. the city says net stop in the excelsior had illegal gambling going on. the company that runs the shop agreed to shut it down and pull out its software. the first year it was open police responded to more than 200 calls at net stop. >> there were definitely people coming in and out of there like 2 a.m. yelling, getting in fights, like i can't tell you how many times i have seen police out here. >> san francisco's city attorney's office says the agreement to leave is not an admission of guilt. the cafe has 60 days to vacate. bay area news, san francisco-based zynga has announced another round of job cuts. this round will affect more than 300 employees, about 15%

of the videogame company's workforce. zynga had already cut about 1200 jobs over the past couple of years. the feds are now taking a close look at an oakland cheerleader's lawsuit against the raiders. 28-year-old lazy t recently filed a class action lawsuit in alameda county on behalf of 40 raiderettes and other squad members. the u.s. department of labor is now investigating lacy t's claims. the team failed to pay them -- that the team failed to pay them minimum wage and other expenses. no comment from the raiders. coming up more than 100 passengers on another cruise ship that became very sick. the source of the latest outbreak, coming up. >> the big game is still two days away, but we're already getting a look at some of the highly anticipated super bowl commercials. why you will be seeing fewer ads this time around. >> and storm clouds beginning to part. that means more sunshine coming our way maybe a few showers over the weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. >> and traffic still moving well through that westbound commute leaving the altamont

second... super bowl ad. t's worth four million dollars. the compan oakland-based toy company goldieblox scored a free 30- second super bowl ad. that's worth $4 million.

the company was picked through a contest hosted by intuit. it got one million votes and beat 15,000 other small businesses to win the grand prize. goldieblox makes toys to inspire the next generation of female engineers. well, even the most die- hard super bowl fans enjoy a little entertainment during the commercial breaks. and this year the advertisers were upping their game. as alexis christoforous reports, on sunday you'll see longer ads targeting a broader more sophisticated audience. >> the world of luxury has been pulled over your eyes. >> reporter: the big game is known for its big ticket commercials. they have become must-see tv. . the spots are a creative coup for the advertisers and moneymaker. a 30-second spot costs more than $4 million and this year companies are going long doubling down for 60 second ads. >> if you are going to tell a

more sophisticated story you need more time to do it. >> reporter: advertising experts say companies are looking to connect with women and families so they are moving away from the slapstick low brow ads of years past and into more feel good storytelling, some coming close to cute overload. >> there were 68 different shots that went into that 60- second ad. they are like very sophisticated almost mini films. >> reporter: this year many companies released teaser videos. some promising the muppets and cast reunions. others looking the viewers with an unfinished plot line. >> we want people to talk before and after your game about the spots. >> if only i can make this message go viral. >> reporter: there's no shortage of celebrities or humor. >> every time a volkswagen hits 100,000 miles, a german engineer gets his wings. >> reporter: but armchair

hour. the earlier accident in lafayette is cleared out. and highway 92 heading across the san mateo bridge so far trouble freeway and as lawrence mentioned roadways may be damp. we are not looking at the wet stuff that we had this same time yesterday morning. the altamont pass west 580 you can see our yellow sensors are beginning to see the backups now west 580 slow from the 205 interchange approaching vasco. once you pass vasco traffic is fine through the dublin grade. lots of room in milpitas. once you get into the silicon valley traffic is extremely light. no major problems for all of santa clara county. bart is on time this morning. no delays for muni, ace or caltrain. that's your "kcbs traffic." now to lawrence. liza, it is so nice to see you today. you're so cheery and ready to go always on a friday. >> you know why? because it's chinese new year. i heard you're beginning out envelopes. >> "gung hay fat choy"! >> exactly. >> i love those red envelopes.

around the bay area today we are going to see a lot of sunshine coming our way a couple of clouds early on this morning and our hi-def doppler radar showing you the showers widening down and -- winding down and moving out of town of. it's dry on our hi-def doppler radar so looking good today. so the showers coming to an end this morning, although we have had a few leftover showers overnight. clearing skies and dry conditions on this friday and then it looks like a sunny saturday but a chance of a few showers as we head in toward sunday. showers coming to an end as that low pressure center starts to kick to the east a bit. so i think behind that, some breezy conditions developing. you will see a mix of sun and clouds for today. and a lot of snow in the high sierra nevada. all right. speaking of snow up there, they have some avalanche warnings extended there until 7:00 in the morning. expecting a few more snowflakes this morning then that should begin to settle down and then it looks like computer models showing you the skies beginning to clear out more of an offshore wind developing. so i think we are going to see more sunshine as we head toward the afternoon. and some dry weather to start out the first part of the

weekend. temperatures are going to stay cool though. some mid-50s toward the coastline. 50s and 60s inside the bay. you will see some 50s and 60s also as you make your way into the interior valleys. inside the bay a little breezy into san francisco about 58. and a cool 55 in daly city. next couple of days we are going to see the sunshine making a return and then a slight chance of showers at least near the coastline on sunday. then a return to dry and some warmer weather toward the middle of the week. >> it was fun for a while. >> it was for a day or so. felt like winter again. >> didn't last very long. all right, lawrence, thanks. georgia governor nathan deal says he is to blame for the state's lack of preparedness during this week's winter storm. two inches of snow fell on tuesday crippling the atlanta area making roads impassable. thousands of people had to abandon their cars on highways after sitting still for hours. deal says he will order a review to find out how to avoid such problems in the future. and happening today, colorado movie theater shooting suspect james holmes will be in court for an expert witness

hearing today. the defense and the prosecution are fighting over whether crime scene reconstruction experts should be allowed to testify at the trial. holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 at an aurora movie theater in colorado back in 2012. another cruise ship is dealing with a bunch of sick passengers an outbreak of the norovirus making more than 170 passengers and crew members sick. a live picture of that ship right here at the port of houston where the caribbean princess returned more than a day ahead of schedule. the cruise line said it was because of the weather and not the sickness on board. the passengers are getting off that ship this morning. a new study suggests tanning beds are worse for your health than cigarettes. researchers say the number of skin cancer cases due to indoor tanning is higher than the number of lung cancer cases from smoking. [ pause ] >> if you have ever been in a tanning bed it increases your risk for melanoma by more than

off today. what's planned for the big celebration. >> a few more showers showing up overnight. the skies starting to part. but another chance over the weekend. we'll tell you when coming up. >> and we have an accident delaying traffic in san mateo. this accident happened north 101 approaching third avenue. delays approaching the scene. i'll have details with "kcbs traffic" still ahead. good morning, everyone. it's friday, january 31. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 5:30. and we begin with some breaking news in santa clara. a house is barely standing right now. a fire ripped through it overnight. a woman inside suffered burns and was rushed to the hospital this morning. kpix 5's keit do gathering information. he is at the scene. kiet, apparently, a smoke alarm likely saved that family. >> reporter: four people survived this fire. from our vantage point, where we're standing right now, you can look through the house and see sky on the other end. that's because the roof has collapsed. the building is just gutted right now and it's a total

loss. the fire broke out around 1:00 this morning near the 49ers stadium. no one was awake at the time to see smoke or flames so it was engulfed by the time the firefighters got here. a smoke alarm woke up one. people. that person then woke up the other three people. and then everybody escaped okay. one woman suffered minor burns to the lower part of her body and there was so much heat neighbors say there wasn't much to do to get everyone out. >> when i first looked out the window, it was a small fire right in front of the van. and then i woke my husband up to call the police and we came out, we started throwing rocks at the window. but no one came out. >> reporter: this house just went on the market for sale. right no investigators are looking to see if there's any suspicious nature to this fire. so far no reason to suspect foul play.

live in santa clara, kiet do, kpix 5. california's top water watcher says now more than ever weigh need to save -- we need to save every drop of water we can. that's after the latest check on the sierra snowpack at a record low only 12% of normal. the 8" of snow they had at boreal made it better for skiers but it didn't put a dent in the drought. >> these first storms are just being absorbed into the dry ground. >> i don't know if you have seen folsom lake but it's sad. it's a big little pond. if we don't get any runoff soon we are going to be hurting for summertime. >> ski resorts are making snow. this is folsom lake. the water level is actually lower than it was before the rain this week. lawrence, were you in that last weekend? >> yes. some bridges are ex-exposed that haven't been exposed in

decades. unbelievably dry. not much more rain coming our way. things beginning to settle down now. our hi-def doppler radar has been tracking showers overnight. most of that just light activity sliding through. but you can see right at the end of the loop, it all begins to disappear. so i think things quieting down now. the clouds are going to be parting. still, a little cool if you are headed out the door. temperatures dropping off into the 40s. 49 degrees in san jose. 44 in santa rosa. and 49 in san francisco. as we head toward the afternoon, we'll find a mix of sun and clouds. a little breezy toward the coastline. temperatures there only in the 50s. about 58 in san francisco. 60 in redwood city. let's check on the roadways with liza battalones. >> we still have delays now because of an earlier accident that happened on 101 in san mateo. it happened in that northbound direction approaching third avenue. at one point we had the left lane shut down. that lane is now open so traffic is beginning to recover approaching the scene. but take a look at east 92. that is slow this morning

eastbound heading across the san mateo bridge. part of the reason ask we have roadwork that has lanes shut down on eastbound 92. the westbound toll plaza still okay with no major delays for that westbound drive just a touch of slow traffic and you can see some of those brake lights there just as you hit midspan heading for the bay bridge toll plaza. all feeder freeways still looking okay and westbound traffic "friday light" approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. that's a look at "kcbs traffic. two pilot and two passengers walked away from a small plane crash after it skidded off a runway at san jose's reid-hillview airport. the twin-engine turboprop made a normal landing just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. but then the plane careened off the runway through a grassy area and hit the fence along ocala avenue. it's the second incidents at reid-hillview this morning. two weeks ago a pair of small planes collided on the runway. no one was injured then either. new this morning local schools are told to quit taking new students and to give

refunds to the ones they are already have. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran live in the newsroom now to explain why the government is stepping in now to crackdown on the classes. cate. >> reporter: today several bay area computer programming academy awards could face fines of up to $50,000 if they don't comply with the state but these schools say they are ready to work with them. >> our goal here is to be the most direct path towards the ongoing education in working as a developer. >> reporter: hack reactor one of the schools issued a citation letter. these letters told these coding boot camps to stop enrolling students and give refunds to past students until the academies are approved to operate. it came from the bureau for private post-secondary education. it said these schools aren't exempt from the law and need to be licensed. the boot camps say they are willing to comply with the state but shutting its doors would be catastrophic to current students and could bankrupt them. some stay regulations could be tricky for these coding book camps. for example, the state requires

schools to get approval every time it changes its curriculum. we know in the coding industry, that's almost every day. live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> computer coding boot camps typically charge students more than $10,000 a session. some people with criminal pathses are among those working for -- pasts are among those workedded for "covered california." as juan fernandez reports that raises concerns as enrollees have to submit personal information. >> reporter: enrolling for health insurance under "covered california" should be safe. but new information reveals 31 out of more than 3,000 certified enrollment counselors have a criminal past. former prosecutor and security expert says that could be a problem. >> there are individuals here who are being given information that is very personal that can locate you, that can identify you, and that can destroy your future if it is misused. >> reporter: information released by "covered

california" shows the past crimes range from forgery, shoplifting, burglary, robbery and welfare fraud. dana howard with "covered california" says all applicants went through thorough background checks and training. >> these convictions happened 10, 20, 30 years ago and they do not pose a threat or a significant threat to those people who they would be doing business with. >> reporter: "covered california" went on to say enrollment counselors have access to the name, address, telephone and social security numbers of people but only of those they enroll. >> we know well who they are. so that it's not a case where if anything did happen that that was, uhm, that was inappropriate, that we would not know who did it and where to find them. >> reporter: he says the state should require disclosure of the counselors' criminal past and give applicants the opportunity to speak to someone else if they wish to do so. in los angeles, i'm juan fender for kpix 5. >> an attorney for "covered california" did caution this could deter some people from

signing up for health insurance. some other bay area news now. a suspected burglar is on the loose this morning following a manhunt. this is in milpitas. two others were arrested. a police dog helped in the search yesterday afternoon near north abel street and marilyn drive. people in the area were urged to stay inside homes as police searched the area. there was a scare in the cal campus last night. the fire department says a little before 8:00 a container of hydrochloric acid broke in the science building on campus. about 2 liters spilled. police cleared out all the students on that sixth floor just to be safe. nobody was injured. the bay area and people all across the world are celebrating the beginning of the lunar new year. restaurants in san francisco's chinatown were full last night as people enjoined new year's eve. the lunar new year is the longest and most important holidays in some asian countries. in china it's the spring festival. along with the traditional

joya das... of cbs moneywat dot-com is on wall street. morn investors are lacking for another winning session to end the week. we have a report from wall street on a friday. good morning. >> reporter: frank and michelle, good morning to you. good morning, everyone. we kick the week off and we kick at least a day off with some earnings report. mattel says it [ indiscernible ] classics including barbie and fisher-price were sluggish during the holiday season. still its 4th quarter in, climbed year over year. yesterday the dow was up 109, nasdaq up 71. well, another day another security breach and this time it's internet giant yahoo that's affected. the company says that user names and passwords have been stolen and used to access email accounts. yahoo is not saying how many users are impacted but the company says it is resetting passwords to protect users. toyota suspended sales of six of its most popular models

equipped with heated seats due to the risk of fire. 36,000 vehicles are affected including camry, avalon, siena and tacoma models between 2013 and 2014 model years, also 2014 corollas and tundras are affected. the fabric on the seats does not meet u.s. safety standards and will have to be replaced. no fires or injuries have yet been reported. >> all right, joya das of cbsmoneywatch.com, thank you. the polar bear sees snow for the first time. >> the bear is just a little cub at the toronto zoo. let's take a look. there she is. so cute. almost blending into the snow there. remy is just 12 weeks old. she felt at home in the white stuff but it did take a few minutes to warm up to it. it she was one of a few polar bears born in the zoo in november. >> in six months she will probably weigh 1,000 pounds and try to eat you. >> that's a bit of a problem.

[ pause ] >> you, too! >> thank you, frank. >> you're welcome! >> all right! let's keep it moving here as we talk about the san mateo commute. northbound 101 approaching third avenue. we have this accident we have been watching and we are getting an update now from the chp that at least two right lanes are shut down at this hour. an accident involving at first it was a car and a big rig. it's now a six-car pile-up now. again, this is north 101 approaching third avenue. two right lanes shut down. traffic backed up beyond highway 92. alternates, el camino or other san mateo city streets to get around the delays. this accident will be out there for quite a while. to the san mateo bridge, westbound 92 leaving hayward bound for the peninsula, no problems as of yet for that toll plaza. that westbound traffic continues light again as you head into the foster city area. and the bay bridge commute we are going to call it "friday light" right now.

[ laughter ] this morning, police found amanda knox's ex-boyfriend at a hotel near italy's border. a court upheld a murder conviction against him and knox and increased knox's sentence to 28.5 years in prison. it was the third trial for knox and her ex-boyfriend both convicted in a first trial and acquitted in the second. they are convicted of killing a roommate of amanda knox in 2007 when they were exchange students. >> every bit of evidence all the way down has been thrown out.

on the bay bridge on the approach to treasure island. i'll have details on that with "kcbs traffic" still ahead. the boston marathon bombing suspect could now face the death penalty if convicted. as adriana diaz reports, that move by attorney general eric holder is one of the most high- profile decisions of his career. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder says dzhokhar tsarnaev should pay for his life for last april's twin bombs at the boston marathon. three people died and 260 others injured. tsarnaev and his brother tamerlan were seen on surveillance video just before the blast carrying backpacks law enforcement says contained pressure cooker bombs. in court documents, prosecutors say tsarnaev knowingly created a grave risk of death and acted in a specially heinous cruel and depraved matter. the brothers evaded police for four days until this gun battle

in watertown, massachusetts. tamerlan tsarnaev was killed along with an m.i.t. police officer. tsarnaev was wounded and found in watertown. inside a boat he was hiding in, there was an alleged confession which said it was in response to military action in muslim countries. boston's mayor supports the decision and honors the victims of the attack. >> today my thoughts and prayers are with the family of martin richard, lynsey lou, krystle cambell, sean collier and those whose live have been changed. >> reporter: tsarnaev pled not guilty. no trial date is set. adriana diaz, cbs news. >> with the death penalty now a factor it's possible that tsarnaev's attorneys could seek a plea deal for a life sentence. a pretrial conference is scheduled for february 12. salt lake city school district apologizing now for taking food away from hungry elementary school children this week. 30 students lost their school
